As the Head of Primary, I have the privilege of daily witnessing the importance of strong partnerships between home and school. However, I also write this from another perspective, as a parent of two children who attend Emmanuel Christian School themselves. Recently, during Parent Teacher Interviews, I was reminded again of just how valuable these opportunities are. Hearing my children’s teachers speak about their progress, growth, strengths, and areas for continued development was incredibly encouraging. The conversations were not simply about academic achievement, but about the whole child, their confidence, character, wellbeing, and learning journey. What stood out most was the reassurance that comes from knowing there are other adults deeply invested in your child’s success. As parents, we naturally want the very best for our children. There is something powerful about realising that your child’s teacher is equally cheering them on, celebrating their growth, and thoughtfully considering ways to help them flourish. It creates a genuine sense of teamwork. At Emmanuel, we believe this partnership between parents and teachers is one of the greatest strengths of our community. Whether through Open Classrooms, Parent Teacher Interviews, emails, Seesaw posts or the simple conversations that happen in the courtyard before and after school, these connections matter deeply. They build trust, consistency, and a shared understanding around how we can best support each child. Research strongly supports the importance of parent engagement in education. Educational researcher John Hattie identifies parent involvement as having a significant positive impact on student achievement, particularly when schools and families work collaboratively to support learning both at school and at home (Hattie 2009). Children thrive when they see the important adults in their lives united with a common purpose. Ecclesiastes 4:9 reminds us that, ‘Two are better than one.’ This verse beautifully reflects the heart of our Emmanuel community. Together, as parents and educators, we can continue to encourage, nurture, and guide our students as they grow into all God has created them to be. As we move through the remainder of the term, I encourage all families to continue nurturing these connections with their child’s teacher. Never underestimate the impact a conversation, a shared celebration of progress, or a collaborative discussion around support strategies can have on a child’s confidence and success.
