The Power of CreativityOne of the great joys of childhood is creativity. Children have an incredible ability to transform the ordinary into something extraordinary. A cardboard box becomes a castle, the backyard becomes an unexplored wilderness, and a simple story can transport them to another world entirely. Yet, somewhere along the journey into adulthood, many of us stop being quite so creative. Life becomes busy, responsibilities grow, and we can forget how valuable it is to imagine, play and simply enjoy creating something together. As Christians, we are reminded from the very beginning of the Bible that we worship a creative God. Genesis tells us that God created the heavens and the earth, filling His world with incredible beauty, diversity, and wonder. We, too, are made in His image, and our capacity to imagine, create, explore, and experience joy is a wonderful gift from Him. Creativity, therefore, is not something we need to leave behind in childhood. As parents, carers, and educators, some of the most meaningful connections we build with children happen when we enter their world. It might be reading a book aloud and giving every character a different voice, venturing outside together to explore God’s creation, drawing, building, cooking, engaging in imaginative play, or simply sitting around the table with a pack of cards. These moments may seem simple, but they are powerful. In my own family, one of these simple joys has become playing Uno with our children each night. There is nothing particularly elaborate about it. It is just a deck of cards, some friendly competition, plenty of laughter and the inevitable excitement when someone plays a Draw Four! Yet, it has become a moment in our day that I treasure. For that short time, we are together, talking, laughing, and sharing an experience. This is part of the beauty of creativity: it creates opportunities for connection. When we enter into these moments with children, we communicate that their ideas matter and, most importantly, that they are worth our time and attention. Jesus demonstrated the importance of welcoming and valuing children, saying, ‘Let the little children come to me’ (Matthew 19:14). Perhaps part of valuing childhood is being willing to step into it with them, to wonder, explore, imagine, and laugh alongside them. So, may we continue to create with our children. Read the book with funny voices. Build the cubby. Explore God’s creation. Draw the picture. Deal the cards. Because sometimes it is within these simplest moments that relationships are strengthened, joy is shared, and precious memories are created. Laura Ferguson – Head of Primary
