Spring – A season of new growth within and beyond the classroom

As we step into the warmth and renewal of Spring, I am filled with gratitude for the vibrant life that is blossoming across our school community. Spring is a powerful reminder of God’s faithfulness and the promise of new beginnings. Just as the earth awakens with fresh growth, so too do our students flourish in their learning, character, and relationships; both within the walls of Emmanuel Christian School and as they venture beyond our gates into the wider Greater Hobart community.

This term, our students have embraced exciting opportunities for growth through a rich calendar of events and experiences. From the practical insights of the Tasmanian Building and Construction Trade Careers Day in Hobart and the Hi-Viz Army Civil Construction presentation at school, to the intellectual challenge of the Maths Relay Competition, Festival of Bright Ideas, and National Science Week activities, including visits from UTAS Young Scientists, our students are engaging deeply with their future pathways. Further enriching their journey are the TAS Police Engagement presentation, the LOTE Language Fair, a Theatre Royal Drama performance, Mustard Christian Student Leaders’ Workshop, the Careers Expo, and our special ECON event. These experiences not only broaden horizons but also equip our students with the skills, confidence, and values to thrive in the world beyond school. We are so grateful that we can offer these fulfilling, worthwhile and rewarding experiences for our students.

Secondary Update – Maths

Growing Mathematical Minds

Semester 2 began with great enthusiasm and achievement in Mathematics, and there have been some exciting opportunities for our students to challenge themselves and showcase their skills.

The semester started with the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC), where our Secondary students eagerly took part alongside thousands of students across the country. We are delighted to celebrate their success, with students attaining awards ranging from Participation through to Credit.

Adding to this success, our students once again, participated in the Annual Southern Mathematics Relay. This fast-paced and collaborative event requires students to apply their mathematical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork skills under pressure. Our teams represented the school with joy, enthusiasm, and determination, truly shining throughout the competition.

In the classroom, students have continued to engage in meaningful and hands-on learning experiences. Our Year 10 students have been expanding their understanding of how mathematics connects to the real world through the study of Networks.

Meanwhile, Years 8 and 9 have begun the semester focusing on the Measurement strand. Year 8 students enjoyed a range of exciting investigations centred on discovering and exploring the value of Pi (π).

Our Year 9 students have demonstrated both creativity and precision as they have been constructing sophisticated 3D models from net diagrams.

Primary Update – Year 1

The Oak Lodge

In Year 1, we have been exploring how education and schooling have evolved over the past century. Our students have been fascinated by what school life was like in days gone by—particularly the rather alarming discovery that corporal punishment was once considered an acceptable part of the school day! Needless to say, they were very relieved to learn that teaching and learning have come a long way.

To bring this period of history to life, the Year 1 students had the wonderful opportunity to visit ‘The Oak Lodge’, an 1830s Georgian schoolhouse in Richmond. Through a live re-enactment, they experienced school life from a bygone era, including sitting still on wooden pews, holding ink and quill pens, and following the very strict instructions of their teacher.

The students were particularly surprised to discover that some classroom duties involved keeping the school classroom fire burning throughout the day—a responsibility certainly not found on today’s classroom job charts!

We had a fantastic time and finished our excursion at the local park, where we were enthusiastically surrounded by a rather cheeky gang of local ducks, keen to investigate the Year 1 lunchboxes!
