I was reminded on Monday afternoon about a term I had not thought about for a long time but I knew you would all like to know – imprinting!

Ah! Imprinting – “What is that?” you ask, with the eagerness of a Kinder student on the first day of school. I’m glad you asked.

I read an interesting article titled, Human-imprinting in Birds and the Importance of Surrogacy. It starts by asking, then answering the same question you are thinking about as you read this:

Imprinting is a form of learning in which an animal gains its sense of species identification. Birds do not automatically know what they are when they hatch – they visually imprint on their parents during a critical period of development. After imprinting, they will identify with that species for life.

For wild birds it is crucial to their immediate and long-term survival. For example, precocial baby birds (such as ducks, geese, and turkeys) begin the process of imprinting shortly after hatching so that they follow the appropriate adult, providing them with safety.

Imprinting allows baby birds to understand appropriate behaviors and vocalisations for their species, and also helps birds to visually identify with other members of their species so they may choose appropriate mates later in life.

Birds learn about what they are from a significant other. Another bird of the same species or another creature, affects how they think and act. They progressively become like the creature they are imprinting.

The same goes for humans – especially our young humans. They imprint on their parents. Other adults may be significant but parents have an influential effect.

So, what are our students learning from home?

Teachers are significant in the lives of students. What are students learning from teachers?

It can be both scary and exciting to think about the influence we can have in the next generation.

Students in 7, 9 and 10 Visual Arts enjoyed a variety of art activities throughout their first semester.

The year 7 students were challenged to develop their drawing skills, bringing focus to drawing what they see in front of them rather than what they “think” they see. They developed their skills through a series of drawing exercises that ended with a beautiful set of shoe drawings.

The Year 9 and 10 group did similarly but placed their shoes into another unusual setting or by morphing their shoe into another entity. These drawings were on display in the office for a term.

Among other activities during camp time, a group of student artists created some beautiful murals in the art room, although incomplete at the moment, they look wonderful and show what Emmanuel students are capable of.

This semester the Year 8 to 10 art students have continued to develop their drawing skills as well as creating “Kandinski “ colour studies, developing their sense of colour effect and affect.

Official Opening of the Primary Classrooms Refurbishment Project

On the 8 September, Parents and Carers are welcome to attend the official opening of our Primary Classrooms Refurbishment. Senator Jono Duniam will be officially opening the event which will give us an opportunity to thank the Federal Government for their $218,000 grant towards the project.

We will also hear from two of our long term Primary teachers Annie Joy and Anne Blake as they tell us about how much the school has changed over the past 20 years!

Students will need to bring a copy of the book they are from or borrow it from the library. We ask that there be no scary Halloween type costumes to ensure all students enjoy the day.

• Tuesday - 6.00pm - 7.00pm Parents/Friends Evening

Students will be encouraged to create a Wish List to be sent home so parents can review them online and make a pre- payment using Larrikin Cash.

Purchasing Items

Larrikin Cash works like real cash, and even prints out to look like money! It’s set up as an online item where you can simply enter any amount you wish. (Please don’t add the actual products to your online cart, just the Larrikin Cash item, as products need to be collected from the book fair).

Once you pass through the checkout, you will then receive an email with your Larrikin Cash, which you can either print out and give to your child, or write the 5 digit code onto the wish list. You are effectively buying a voucher that can then be exchanged for any items at the Book Fair.

Contactless (EFTPOS) payments are preferred however cash will be accepted in the correct amount (we are unable to provide change).

If items are sold out and still available online a back order will placed at the end of Friday and should be delivered within the next week.

On 24 August 5.45 - 7.00pm, I am looking for parent helpers for the following tasks: Helping shoppers at the Fair, checkout, and filling orders.
